Below is a running list (in order of importance) of ideas I’ve come across for how to live a more sustainable life. A lot of focus is put on reducing CO2 emissions–mostly justifiably–but there are additional aspects of the climate crisis we each need to consider.
- Vote for and support leaders who prioritize the environment
- Support policies and initiatives that promote sustainability and hold businesses and governments accountable for their environmental impact
- Follow the mantra of Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle to minimize waste and conserve resources
- Eat less (or no) meat, more plant-based foods
- Switch to renewable energy sources like solar or wind power to reduce reliance on fossil fuels
- Electrify everything (appliances in home, car, etc.)
- Turn off lights and appliances when not in use, and choose energy-efficient products (Energy Star)
- Limit flying
- Walk, bike, carpool, or use public transportation whenever possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles
- Reduce consumption and waste, shop second-hand if possible
- Reduce water usage by fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, using water-saving appliances, and only running the dishwasher and washing machine when they are full
- Improve insulation, install energy-efficient windows, and use smart thermostats to reduce energy consumption at home
- Plan meals, store food properly, and compost leftovers to minimize food waste, which contributes to methane emissions in landfills
- Compost food scraps and yard waste to provide nutrients for your garden instead of sending to landfills
- Choose eco-friendly and ethically sourced products with minimal packaging and a focus on sustainability
- Support and purchase from businesses that prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility
- Use reusable bags, bottles, and containers instead of disposable ones to decrease plastic pollution
- Plant trees, which absorb carbon dioxide and provide oxygen, making them essential for combating climate change
- Use native plants, conserve water, and avoid chemical pesticides and fertilizers to create an eco-friendly garden
- Stay informed about environmental issues and spread awareness to inspire others to live sustainably
- Be a role model for others by living a sustainable lifestyle and sharing your knowledge and experiences with your community
